Poet Irene Mitchell, a long-time teacher of writing, will read from her new book, A Study of Extremes in Six Suites (Cherry Grove Collections). These are poems which convey the utmost point at which the personal and the universal ultimately converge. Alice Fulton has said about this collection, "With grace and depth, Irene Mitchell writes toward the largest subjects. I was smitten...by her delicate, profound lyrics, which seem Dickinsonian in their slant truths and surprising language, their tonal complexities and unsettling charms....In addition to such soulful gravity, there's insouciance and humor." Mitchell's previous collection is Sea Wind on the White Pillow (Axes Mundi Press).
Judith Kerman, Publisher/Editor of Mayapple Press, has published nine books or chapbooks of poetry and translations, including Praises & Offenses: Three Women Poets from the Dominican Republic (BOA Editions, 2009), Galvanic Response (March Street Press, 2005), the bilingual collection Plane Surfaces/Plano de Incidencia (Santo Domingo: CCLEH, 2002), and A Woman in Her Garden: Selected Poems of Dulce María Loynaz (Cuban; 1992 Cervantes Prize laureate—White Pine Press). She was a Fulbright Senior Scholar to the Dominican Republic in 2002, translating the poetry and fiction of contemporary Dominican women.
